Open Recipe is a publication series that investigates “the recipe” as a mode of communication and cooking as an “art.” It is a collaboration between the artist-run initiative, sodA mundial run by Galia Basail-Mulcahy, and writer/researcher Layla Fassa.

The structure of Open Recipe impersonates the structure of a cookbook. These “recipes” might come in the form of a fusion dish, a musical score, a toolbox, a utopia, a series / of / slashes, a manifesto, a guide to community organizing, a CSA package, a map, a calendar for planting and harvest, physical (or imaginary) infrastructure, a bunch of receipts, an ice breaker, etc.

Our research and collaboration led us to our own interpretation of the open recipe: A recipe is always open, crafted by communities instead of individuals, and adaptable to seasons, ingredients, and interpretation.

The Open Recipe/Receta Abierta vol. 1 (2020) artists’ cookbook was produced during sodA’s residency with Cráter Invertido. It features contributions by 8 artists and collectives with practices based in or connected to Mexico City, in addition to contributions by editors Galia Basail Mulcahy and Layla Fassa.
