"The course introduces students to the RISO digital duplicator, the history of stencil duplicating, print production, workflow from design, file set-up to print, self-publishing, and publishing-as-artistic-practice. Students learn how to confidently and independently design for and operate the Risograph, exploring its possibilities, limitations, and idiosyncrasies through objective-focused projects that use collage, bookmaking, animation, and editorial design principles."
Igor Arume is an artist, designer, researcher, educator, and collector with a decade of experience in risograph printing. He is currently a 3d year MFA student in Visual Studies at the University of Missouri, where he was instructor of record for the Intro to RISO course, drawing and letterpress. He also holds a Master's degree in Design from Brazil, where his thesis explored the resurgence and appropriation of Risography by graphic designers for publishing as artistic practice. In 2015, he co-founded Risotrip Print Shop Co., the first risograph studio established in Rio de Janeiro. His work has been featured in group exhibitions across Brazil, Europe, China, and the U.S., and he has participated in Art Book Fairs such as Printed Matter's NYABF and LAABF, Detroit Art Book Fair, Multiple Formats, Pittsburgh Art Book Fair, and Press Play. Arume's publications are part of collections in libraries and bookshops, including the Penumbra Foundation, Printed Matter, Inga Books, VOLUMES Archive (Zürich), Herbarium Riso (Berlin), and Zines of the Zone (France). His work has also been highlighted in specialized publications such as the book Risomania: The New Spirit of Printing. His art practice originates as a research-based (post-)photographic artistic exploration scrutinizing bureaucratic documents by the institutional apparatus, examining archive material and found images to answer ontological questions about authorship, ownership, and the technical means of reproduction.
