The knitting machine was invented near Nottingham in 1589 and its popularisation led to the Luddite Rebellion in 1811 (Merchant, Blood in the Machine.). It has undergone many transformations, from a worker's menace, to a house-wife’s helper, to an artist’s tool.

This publication explores the machines connections to revolution, violence and cybernetics. It's an investigation into an overlooked & vaguely obsolete tool, trying to understand it's complex past. This publication also includes conversations with contemporary artists and craftspeople working with the machine, figuring out how the knitting machine fits into the the future of art & labour.
