Black Utopias: Then & Now is the inaugural title in #BlackTrust, a book series based on public programs anized through the Boston Ujima Project's #BlackTrust: Chuck Turner Arts & Lecture Series. The book features author Aaron Robertson (who recently published The Black Utopians) in conversation with urban planning scholar Stacey Sutton, moving across histories of Black settlement, cooperative economics, political struggle, and collective care. Black Utopias: Then & Now explores how Black communities have imagined and built alternative worlds within and beyond the constraints of American democracy.

Ujima Press is an independent publisher arm of the Boston Ujima Project, a Black-led democratic organization building cooperative business, arts, and investment infrastructure in Boston, with a mission to return wealth to working-class communities of color. We publish a yearly post-capitalist magazine, a lecture reader series, and a variety of small books connecting community members, organizers, and members of the solidarity economy to share out narratives of criticism, resistance, sustenance, and world building. We are committed to making liberatory thought engaging and accessible; our approach to publishing materializes this commitment, through our physical prints and through our events and narrative organizing. Ujima Press serves as one of several entry points for the broader public to discover and participate in the solidarity economy and economic democracy. The Press was founded in 2023 by Cierra Peters, Alula Hunsen, and Mark Hernandez-Motaghy.
