The Cuban government was interested in the political potential of music, and the state label GREM released hundreds of politicized records, although the vast majority were by Cuban artists. It was actually the East Germans that created the closest thing to a musical Tricontinental, releasing a series of Rote Lieder [Red Song] compilation LPs to document East Berline's annual Festival of Political Song, which ran from 1970 through the 1980s. These records contain struggle songs from dozens of countries.
